H. Rand Scott, MD
Board-Certified Pain Management Specialist
Dr. H. Rand Scott is a board-certified anesthesiologist and subspecialty-trained pain management specialist who has practiced interventional pain medicine in Newport Beach since 1996 — the longest-tenured pain physician in the area. He brings three decades of diagnostic and treatment experience to complex, ambiguous, and disputed pain cases, including more than fifteen years as a medical forensic consultant. Dr. Scott developed evidence-based opioid management and safety protocols now used as practice standards, pioneered the early U.S. use of gabapentin for pain, and is a recognized national authority on opioid-to-non-opioid transition — expertise directly relevant to causation, treatment-reasonableness, and medication-necessity questions. He has delivered over one hundred invited lectures to hospitals, medical staffs, and physician organizations on pain assessment, prescribing standards, and legal issues in pain management, and was twice named an Orange County Medical Association "Physician of Excellence." Dr. Scott holds privileges at Hoag Hospital and serves as an outpatient anesthesiologist at Newport Center for Special Surgery.
Education & Training
Dr. Scott earned his B.S. in Biology with High Distinction Honors from The Pennsylvania State University, where he was a defensive back on Joe Paterno's 1982 National Championship football team. He completed medical school at Penn State's Hershey Medical Center, followed by general surgery internship and residency at the University of Southern California's LAC/USC Medical Center in Los Angeles. He returned to Penn State Hershey Medical Center for his anesthesiology residency, including a full year of sub-specialization in pain management, and served on the faculty of the Penn State Pain Management Center as an attending physician responsible for resident supervision and teaching before entering practice in Newport Beach.
